As an IT professional, I\u2019ve been doing software development<\/a> for over 25 years. Some 10 years ago I discovered Agile\u2019s benefits and started adopting its principles. But very often, I\u2019ve been asking myself: am I doing it the right way? Is there something I could improve or change? (And is 42 really the answer to everything?)<\/p>\n So, I decided to get certified.<\/p>\n Then stumbled upon a further question: which Agile certification? There are several of them, but the norm is Project Management Institute\u2019s Agile Certified Practitioner<\/a> (PMI-ACP)\u00ae. Sure, the registration (see below) gives you one year and three attempts to pass the Agile exam \u2013 but that\u2019s not something that I wanted to gamble.<\/p>\n When it comes to exam preparation, you can do it by yourself or decide it\u2019s serious enough to get help \u2013 so I picked a certified preparation course.<\/p>\n PMI provides a list of Registered Education Providers across the globe. I went for PMAccess, based in Romania (my country) and enrolled a three-days intensive course (that costs about \u20ac 500). I got access to great content and \u2013 more important \u2013 to a great trainer who guided and assisted along the way, thus instrumental to my passing the exam.<\/p>\n For what it\u2019s worth, and if you have second thoughts, here\u2019s my take from the Agile course:<\/p>\n Even if I wouldn\u2019t get the certification, I\u2019d still take the course \u2013 it was *that* good.[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=”1_2,1_2″ use_custom_gutter=”on” gutter_width=”3″ _builder_version=”4.4.6″ custom_margin=”||||false|false” custom_padding=”25px||||false|false” border_width_left=”1px” border_color_left=”rgba(0,0,0,0)”][et_pb_column type=”1_2″ _builder_version=”4.4.1″][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.4.6″ text_font=”|300|||||||” quote_font=”|700|||||||” quote_text_align=”left” quote_font_size=”16px” header_2_text_color=”#ff6317″ header_2_font_size=”30px” header_3_font_size=”23px” header_4_font=”||||||||” header_4_font_size=”16px” header_4_line_height=”1.5em” header_5_font_size=”14px” custom_margin=”25px||||false|false” custom_padding=”|||25px|false|false” border_width_left=”1px” border_color_left=”#ff6317″]<\/p>\n As a dad of two, there\u2019s not much free time that I can squeeze. I therefore settled for a 12-weeks, 6 hours \/ week preparation routine, built upon trainer\u2019s plan:<\/p>\n That\u2019s pretty much it: average one hour each day, except Sundays. Step-up to three hours when taking a test. Make sure to get the right family-work balance. Still, that\u2019s not a simple process, as it might take days or even hours. You need relevant experience on both agile and non-agile projects. You need to document it, and that requires some effort. The assessment usually takes no longer than seven days.<\/p>\n Few applicants are selected, on random-sampled basis, for a more rigorous scan. If you\u2019re one of them, you will need to provide extensive proof of experience. For members, the price goes down to US$ 435. You can pick a convenient date and location, from a list of examination centers around the globe.<\/p>\n You get three hours for 120 questions; then pass with at least 75% correct answers. It seems reasonable, but it gets more intense than expected:<\/p>\n Update<\/span>: it is now possible to take an online exam, under strict surveillance via webcam. Now I have the theoretical knowledge and it helps grasping the bigger picture.<\/p>\n But what counts the most is the agile, structured and effective mindset you get. It\u2019s the self-confidence and leverage in convincing clients and colleagues that Agile can help delivering successful projects. You can collect such points either by attending Agile related events, workshop or webinars, either by providing and presenting Agile related content to others. Of course. Should you do it? It depends.<\/p>\n Says PMI: \u201cIf you work on agile teams or if your organization is adopting agile practices, the PMI-ACP is a good choice for you. Compared with other agile certifications based solely on training and exams, the PMI-ACP is evidence of your real-world, hands-on experience and skill. [\u2026] The PMI-ACP\u00ae certification is addressed to all practitioners, not only to Project Managers. All those who have worked with agile methods and who want to learn new approaches that can complete their experience are eligible to apply for certification<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n Then again, even if your employer doesn\u2019t explicitly push you into Agile, you might still want to give it a try.
